Old Pension Scheme in Punjab 2025: Apply Online, Check Status, Eligibility & Benefits

The Punjab state government has introduced the Old Pension Scheme 2025 to provide financial support to senior citizens. The scheme aims to ensure that elderly individuals across the state can lead a comfortable and dignified life after retirement.

Under this scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive a monthly pension directly credited to their bank accounts for convenience and transparency. Single individuals will get ₹2,000 per month, while couples will receive ₹3,000 per month.

What is the Scheme

There are actually two different things people often refer to when they say “Old Pension Scheme (OPS)” in Punjab:

  1. The pension scheme for senior citizens / elderly people (old age pension) under the social welfare department.
  2. The “old pension scheme” for government employees (i.e., the defined‑benefit pension scheme) as opposed to the newer contributory pension (National Pension System ‑ NPS).

I’ll cover both briefly.

a) Senior Citizens Old Age Pension Scheme

  • Under this scheme, the state provides a monthly pension (financial assistance) to elderly residents of the state who meet criteria such as age, income, land ownership etc.
  • Example criteria: Men aged 65 and above; Women aged 58 and above.
  • Also income ceiling (for example: annual income not more than ₹ 60,000) and other eligibility like land ownership maxima.
  • This scheme is run by the state’s social security / women & child development department etc.

b) Old Pension Scheme for Government Employees

  • Many employees in Punjab and other states had been under a defined‑benefit “old pension scheme” in which the government paid a fixed pension after retirement.
  • From 1 April 2004 the NPS (or some variant) was introduced, so many new employees are under it.
  • In Punjab, there has been movement (notification dated 23 May 2025) to apply OPS for approx. 2,500 employees who joined after 1 Jan 2004 but whose posts were advertised or appointment letter issued before that date.
  • However, there remain unresolved demands/protests from employees for full restoration of OPS for more employees.

Eligibility & Key Criteria

Senior Citizens Scheme

Here are the eligibility criteria (approximate – always check latest govt notification):

  • Must be a permanent resident of Punjab. (govtschemes.in)
  • Age: Women ≥ 58 years; Men ≥ 65 years. (Government schemes)
  • Annual income from all sources should be below a threshold (for example ₹ 60,000 per annum) in many cases.
  • Land/house ownership conditions: e.g., in urban area the house not more than 200 sq m, in rural areas land ownership limits (2.5 acres nehri/chahi land OR 5 acres barani etc) in some cases.
  • For the pension scheme for government employees (OPS) the eligibility is determined by whether the employee’s service conditions/post advertisement date/appointment letter date meet the rule. Example: for eligibility under OPS in Punjab: if post advertised or appointment letter issued before 1 Jan 2004 even if joining later.

Benefits

Senior Citizens Pension Scheme

  • According to one source: monthly pension ~ ₹ 1,500 per month for eligible individuals.
  • Some other source claims higher amounts (₹ 2,000 for individual, ₹ 3,000 for couple) under a scheme labelled “Old Pension Scheme in Punjab 2025”. However these amounts look like media/website estimates rather than official notification.
  • Payments are made by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to bank accounts.

Government Employees OPS

  • For employees eligible under OPS: they will have a defined‑benefit pension (historically something like 50 % of last drawn salary) rather than only the NPS accumulated amount.
  • For the 2,500 employees recently notified: they will be given the option to choose between OPS & NPS.

How to Apply / Check Status

Senior Citizens Pension Scheme

Online:

  • Visit the state portal, e.g. the Connect Punjab website.
  • Also there’s a service listed: “Apply for Old Age Pension Scheme, Punjab” on india.gov.in services site.
  • The steps usually: register / login → fill online application form → upload documents → submit.

Offline:

  • You can also apply via downloading form, filling and submitting at designated offices (District Social Security Officer, Child Development Project Officer, Sewa Kendra etc).

Check Status / Beneficiary Search:

  • The state govt has a “Beneficiary Search With Scheme” portal: you can select district etc and check if you are beneficiary.
  • There is also a “Pension Case Information” site for pensioners: https://agpunjabpension.cag.gov.in/ (Punjab Accounting / GA department) for government pensioners.

Government Employees OPS

  • The recent notification (23 May 2025) indicates eligible employees will be given a three‑month window to choose between OPS & NPS.
  • Implementation details (opening of GPF accounts, etc) are under ministries/departments.
  • For checking status of one’s pension case (govt employee) the Accountant General’s site may apply.

Important “2025 Updates / What’s New”

  • The state government of Punjab issued a notification on 23 May 2025 to implement OPS for ~2,500 employees whose posts/appointment letters were before 1 Jan 2004 but who joined after that date.
  • For senior citizen pensions: as of February 2025 the state govt reported that 22.68 lakh elderly beneficiaries had received Rs 3,368.89 crore until December 2024.
  • There are ongoing protests/unions demanding full restoration of OPS for more employees (those joined after Jan 2004 etc).

Things to Be Careful About / Notes

  • Always verify the official notification or state government website for the exact amount of pension, eligibility criteria and mode of application. Some websites (non‑official) may show estimated/old amounts.
  • For senior citizen scheme: mere age and income may not suffice — there are land/house ownership criteria, domicile/residence proof, bank account etc.
  • For government employees: just because the state says “OPS restored” does not automatically mean all cases are covered — the eligibility conditions (advertisement date, joining date, etc) matter and are being contested.
  • For checking status: ensure you have correct district, application ID, etc when using the portal.
  • If applying online, you’ll need to upload scanned documents (age proof, bank passbook, identity proof, land/house verification as applicable).
  • Payment may be quarterly or monthly; often these welfare pensions are credited quarterly.
